Nestlé Waters Canada employees conduct clean-ups to celebrate Waste Reduction Week

Employees achieve local Adopt-A-Road program commitments

PUSLINCH, Ontario, and CHILLIWACK and HOPE, British Columbia – Nestlé Waters Canada, Canada’s marketshare-leading manufacturer and distributor of single-use bottled water beverages, today announced that its employees will conduct community clean-ups as part of the Company’s support of Waste Reduction Week.

Building on the Adopt-A-Road program relationships it has established in three communities where it has a physical presence in Canada, Nestlé Waters Canada employees will recognize Waste Reduction Week by meeting its Adopt-A-Road commitments between October 19 and 26, 2009.

Today, weather permitting, employees in Chilliwack will clean up Promontory Road, between Vedder Road and Thomas Road. Tomorrow, employees in Hope will clean up Flood Hope Road from exit 170 Road to exit 165. On October 24, employees in Puslinch will clean up Wellington Road 34 between Brock Road South and Highway 6.

“We are proud to be associated with Waste Reduction Week as a national sponsor and we are also proud to participate in Adopt-A-Road programs in most of the communities where we have a business presence,” said Gail Cosman, President, Nestlé Waters Canada. “Our company is committed to the 3Rs and we are also committed to doing what we can to ensure our home communities look beautiful year-round.”

“We encourage other businesses in Chilliwack, Hope and Puslinch as well as service clubs and other community organizations to join with us in adopting roads and keeping them litter-free.”

When it comes to the 3Rs, the Company has undertaken the following initiatives:

  • Reduce: In the last five years, the Company has reduced CO2 emissions by 30% for every litre of water produced. That has included reducing the size of our packaging by 30% over the last nine years; reducing the amount of energy we use by 30% and reducing the amount of greenhouse gases we produce by 22%;

  • Re-Use: Where possible, the Company re-uses such items as corrugate, wooden pallets and shipping containers;

  • Recycle: All of the Company’s packaging is 100% recyclable, including bottles and corrugate trays. We promote and underwrite, financially, the recycling of our bottles. We also actively support long-term research into new environmentally-focused packaging technologies such as biodegradable bottles.
