Canada’s weight problem is now an epidemic. About 59% of Canadians are officially over-weight or obese. Our society’s weight problem is a huge contributor to our rising health care costs. It is estimated this health challenge cost our health care system $4.3 billion in 2001 alone. Obesity is a major factor in diabetes, which is Canada’s fifth leading cause of death. About 25% of children born after 2000 will be diagnosed with diabetes at some point in their lives. There’s a lot we need to do.
